Fall Prevention & Stability

Clearly, one of the biggest concerns and threats to the independence of our parents is the potential for a trip or fall that severely injures them. Skull fractures, broken arms and hip fractures are some of the more severe injuries resulting from these accidents. Hip fractures are one of the leading causes of hospitalization and often require long recovery and rehabilitative periods.

The bathroom, bedroom and stairway areas are the most likely areas of our homes where these accidents will occur. The good news is that there are a lot of simple home modification devices on the market today that can reduce these injuries substantially. Hand Grab Bars should be installed wherever assistance is needed to get up or to support oneself. These units can provide a high degree of support in areas such as showers or around toilets. Another very helpful device is the Tub Grab Bar. This product provides security getting in and out of the bathtub, an area that always poses a severe threat of an accident. Its installation is as easy as turning a knob and it attaches without any tools!

Another consideration that you may want to make for added security in the bathroom is the Hinged Arm Support. This handy device provides added safety for entry and exit on the toilet. Its unique feature is the fact that it provides support to the person when there is no wall to attach or mount a grab bar.

Assist Devices

Mobility is essential in living independently and in getting around the house. But how do our parents manage when disabling injuries or illnesses have slowed them down considerably or left them unsteady on their feet? Simple activities such as getting in and out of chairs or navigating down stairways are now major challenges.

Often times, muscle mass has been reduced making it difficult for our parents to juggle the need to carry items and at the same time maneuver around their living quarters. This can be both frustrating and dangerous. Especially, if they live in a home with multiple floors and have to carry clothing and other items up and down stairs.

There are some very excellent products on the market that can assist them dramatically with these daily challenges. The Standard Quad Cane for example can provide the necessary support and leverage needed in transitioning from one location to another. This strong and lightweight cane provides improved stability and self-leveling and has adjustable height features. For added support and stability the Adjustable Walking Aid can provide them with the ultimate support in getting around. Its wide base provides added stability and the permanently affixed handgrips insure user safety.

Carrying devices for walkers also allow the user to transport or store items that they otherwise would not be able to handle. The Economy Walker Bag fits most standard walkers and can be easily installed and cleaned. If your parent(s) is currently using a walker you may want to consider purchasing Walker Glides. These glides permit mobility over obstacles such as uneven sidewalks, carpets and rough grass areas.
