Interview by Tim Lankford

JCunningham

What do you see as the most dangerous area in the house for seniors and why?
Most of the patients I see fall in the bathroom from lack of adequate support.

What health promotion measures can be taken to reduce the risks of falls among seniors?
In bathrooms - grab bars are vitally important - rails can be placed in hallways. Even night lights can improve safety while ambulating to the bathroom in the night.

Do you feel that it is important for seniors to take preventative steps in making their home a safer place?
Absolutely - No one wants to become injured. A few simple steps can help to greatly reduce the risk of falls.

At what age to you think these steps should be taken?
It may seem young, but as we age, our balance and coordination becomes compromised. I think starting at age 65 is good.

What steps do you recommend to reduce the risk of falls among the senior population in their own homes and yards?
Grab bars and rails - throughout - perhaps a home safety evaluation by qualified professionals.

How many seniors are the victims of falls each year in the United States?
The number is high. I believe it is something like out of every 3 adults over the age of 65.

What type of injuries result from falls?
We see everything from broken ankles, hips, shoulders, even sever trauma head injuries - sadly though, many of these injuries could be prevented with a little planning.
